Community College Life

For continuing students, those leaving high school and entering into community college, community college can be a liberating and dizzying experience. Gone are the days of forced schedules, of comfortable schedules. These are the beginning days of independence and For other students community college represents a stepping stone in their career or education.

What to expect

Community college is not a continuation of high school. That much should be made clear after spending an afternoon in the campus bookstore buying material for courses. Community college is a choice and it requires discipline and diligence to navigate. Expect class loads to be intensive and expect classes to present material differently than high school. Professors generally present material through lectures and expect students to prepare by reading course material prior to class. Professors will likely expect student material to be of a high caliber exhibiting mature thinking and writing skills.

Students can also expect to manage their own class loads and time. Students will be expected to determine their daily activities and manage their time effectively. This is done independently. Gone is the safety net of public schools and parental hand holding. Professors expect students to be equipped and attentive in class showcasing a mature attitude. In short students are expected to fulfill their needs on their own. While help and support is available students will need to find it.

What to avoid

Students should avoid enjoying their independence too much and stay focused on their education. Avoid spending excessive time on activities that do not contribute to classes. The bottom line is this: college is paid for out of pocket. It is a choice and should be treated with the respect and seriousness of any other choice that will have long term consequences. Avoid the thought you will not complete your community college program and stay focused.

Above all else avoid the negativity associated with "I can't". You can. You will. Now, get back to work.
